What does it mean?
-
The check engine light (CEL) is an indicator that the vehicle's computer has identified a problem that it cannot automatically correct.
What's the big deal?
-
If you live in any of the Texas counties that require an annual emissions test, your vehicle won't pass if the CEL is illuminated, and you will not be able to renew your registration. Repairs will be required.
-
A blinking CEL indicates a serious problem that requires immediate attention.
-
A steady check engine light usually indicates a serious but not urgent problem and it may be possible to continue to operate the vehicle.
Potential Causes:
-
The problem could be minor such as a loose gas cap or faulty oxygen sensor. However, the problem could be more serious like a catalytic converter problem.
Where does Kwik Kar Southlake come in?
-
We use a code reader to retrieve the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) associated with the check engine light. Knowing the DTC is a good start and gets you in the right "zip code", but it doesn't necessarily tell you exactly what needs to be done.
-
More importantly, we have an on-site skilled mechanic who can diagnose the exact cause of the DTC, provide an estimate and (if approved by you the customer) make the necessary repairs.
