Required by state law in specific counties. If you live in any of the heavily populated Texas metroplexes (DFW, Houston, Austin & El Paso), your vehicle will need to pass a mandatory annual emissions test in order to renew your registration.
Affected Vehicles

Gasoline-powered vehicles 2-24 years old, or those that have had their initial two-year inspection sticker expire, must undergo an emissions test in the affected counties. Tarrant county is an affected county.

Purpose

Assess roadworthiness from a SAFETY perspective.
Affected Vehicles

26,001 pounds or more gross weight, registered weight or gross weight rating.

Farm vehicle with 48,001 pounds or more.

Passenger vehicle of 15 passengers or more.

Hazardous material requiring placards.

In Interstate commerce over 10,000 pounds.
